Licensing of Photographs of Wildlife: Birds,
Game and Other Animals; Plants and Nature Scenes

GENERAL

All photographs on this website are potentially available for license for
editorial or commercial use. However, this site is intended primarily for
sharing with friends and others, and as such some photos are not of
sufficient quality for such uses. The files shown as scanned from slide are
generally of limited quality.

All images on the site are copyrighted by Robert Shantz.

In general I would prefer to license on a non-exclusive basis for your
specified use. However, I would consider other options. Pricing will
depend primarily upon your intended use. Let me know what your normal rate
is for the intended use. If it's reasonable, I'll accept the offer.

Please note that I have no control over how someone may have used the images
from this site without my permission.

The later sections describe the nature of the files that I can furnish.
I have found that the best way to provide files is to temporarily upload the
higher resolution files to my website and allow the buyer to download them
from there.

CONTACTING ME

I can usually be reached by telephone at 928-651-6783 (Mountain Standard
Time applies -- Arizona doesn't go on Daylight Savings). I'm sometimes
gone for a week or two at a time, and will not check the phone. If you get
the answering machine, please take the time to clearly repeat your name and
telephone number.

My email address is Robert@rshantz.com . It's usually fairly reliable, but
from time to time my ISP has problems that keep me from getting it for a few
days. When you email, please create a subject line that clearly lets me
know the purpose of the email. Something like Use of your Brewer's Sparrow
photo. I get quite a bit of spam, and emails from names I don't recognize
with vague subject lines are usually deleted without being opened.

If you haven't heard back within a week or so, please try again. It's
possible for the ISP to lose emails or for me to delete them by mistake.
And the answering machine sometimes drops out with power failures.

If worst comes to worst, there's always snail mail to Robert Shantz,
8080 S Aiden-R Ln, Safford, AZ 85546.

PAYMENT

I will accept payment by check, money order, or PayPal. I do not accept
credit cards directly, but you can use one through PayPal. I'm fully aware
that industry policy often provides for payment on publication. That is
fine so long as I have been told about your policy in advance.

Foreign buyers please note: I much prefer payment by PayPal. Checks and
money orders in foreign funds or drawn on a foreign bank will take up to 45
days for my bank to credit to my account. I will, however, accept them if
necessary. I will not accept wire transfers.

CROPPING

Most of the images on this website have been cropped to a greater or lesser
extent. In the last couple of years I've no longer tried to maintain aspect
ratios, but have cropped as I saw fit. In general, I have cropped tighter
than what might be ideal from an aesthetic standpoint in order to show as
much detail on the animal or flower as possible without creating a web file
that takes an excessive time to download.

As such, any file that does not show original dimensions equal or close to
the out-of-camera sizes (given below) could potentially be cropped
differently for your purposes. Most often, the subject is fairly well
centered, and additional negative space would be available on all sides. In
some photos, mainly birds in flight, the subject may be very close to one edge.

In some cases, I have created a vertical photo by cropping a horizontal
image. And very rarely vice versa. So without contacting me, you cannot be
absolutely certain of the original orientation of a file that has been cropped.

If you need to crop the image differently, let me know and I can get you the
original, uncropped image.

FILE INFORMATION

Almost all of the detail pages for the photos now show the file size of the
image as I edited it (original size in pixels) before downsizing and
compressing for web use. A few of the earlier ones do not. These pages
also give the camera used.

In addition to these high resolution files, I am willing to provide the
original out-of-camera files. The files from 2001 through September 2002
are jpegs from a Minolta Dimage 7. From October 2002 through 2004, only the
Canon Large/Fine jpeg files are available. From January through March of
2005, only the Canon RAW files are available, although I can easily
create a jpeg from those files. From then on, both the Canon RAW and
Canon Large/Fine jpegs are available. In a very few rare cases these
files have been lost.

The original files sizes are as follows for the various cameras I have used.

Minolta Dimage 7: 2560 x 1920 pixels
Canon D60: 3072 x 2048 pixels
Canon 10D: 3072 x 2048 pixels
Canon 20D: 3504 x 2336 pixels
Canon 40D: 3888 x 2592 pixels
Canon 50D: 4752 x 3168 pixels
Canon 70D: 5472 x 3648 pixels
Canon 5D: 4368 x 2912 pixels
Canon 5D Mark II: 5616 x 3744 pixels

STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY SUBJECTS

The vast majority of stock photos on this website are of wildlife, flowers,
and natural landscapes. The greatest number are from the area where I live
-- southeastern Arizona and the adjacent areas of southwestern New Mexico.
Some were taken on trips -- mostly Utah and Wyoming. A number of the
national parks and monuments in these states are covered.

There are also a number of photos of man-made objects, and more will be added
as time goes on. These include mines and mining equipment, rural churches,
power lines, and so on. Most of these do not have property releases, and in
many (most) cases getting these releases would not be possible.

There are no images of identifiable people.
